As you may have noticed, main focuses (focii?) of Wanderlustre are fashion and travel… but this blog is, first and foremost, a lifestyle blog. Emphasis on the “life.” And in Life, sometimes things don’t always go the way you expect them to.
It took me going over a few bumps in the road to finally pull the trigger and begin creating the content that I’ve always been passionate about. As you may have noticed from my Instagram, I love high fashion, traveling, and my Scottish Fold cat Mila. The realization that I’m unhappy in my perfectly-adequate corporate tech job, the initial rejection from the coding bootcamp I applied to (I’m reapplying soon), the inexplicable loss of my best friend and boyfriend to the East Coast, the freeze-out from another close friend for reasons I have yet to decipher, and the two traffic tickets I’ve gotten in the last week as a result of my distraction have me feeling like the wind has been knocked out of me. Didn’t someone once say that bad things come in threes? At last count, I’m at six bad things if you count both tickets as separate events. Thank goodness for my new YSL heels I treated myself to last week. Retail therapy is a thing for a reason.
We all know Life rapid-fires bushels of big, sour citrus fruits at you from time to time. And, contrary to the magnet on my refrigerator, you shouldn’t squirt them in people’s eyes. I know the saying usually tells you to “make lemonade,” but it never says anything about how you get the water and the sugar when all Life leaves you with are lemons. So, for the sake of your beach-bod diet, let’s just make some fresh juice and forget the lemonade.
Both the literal and metaphorical citrus juices are actually really good for you. The metaphorical juice, depending on the blend of flavors, will help you build aspects of your character and grow from the trials you’re currently facing. The literal juice is full of Vitamin C, which is a big booster for your immune system. When Life suddenly yells “Think fast!” and fast-pitches you a bunch of lemons, some limes, a few oranges and a grapefruit, you don’t just let them hit you and then leave them there on the counter to rot and putrefy until they’re a big moldy mess. You catch them, you peel them, you stick them into whatever kind of juicer you have access to until you have a bittersweet virgin cocktail in your hand (but if you happen to have vodka or champagne in stock, it wouldn’t be the worst idea mix some of that in). You take those citrus fruits that Life has handed you, and you savor them because that’s going to be your fuel for the big personal-growth spurt you’re about to crest.
So, in summary, here’s what you shouldn’t do with those lemons and other citrus fruits….
- You don’t leave them sitting in your kitchen, getting moldy and becoming fodder for the fruit flies until there’s a whole infestation of issues to deal with.
- You don’t take them with you to work or social events as an excuse to get out of behaving appropriately or doing the things you should.
- You don’t put them in the freezer and ignore them until they become shriveled and brown and frozen, probably just like your heart if you opted for this approach in the first place.
…and here’s what you should do with them:
- Peel them and squeeze them into juice.
- Compost or dispose the pulp and peel, or bake it into some muffins.
- Add a shot of Tito’s or four fingers of bubbly (optional but recommended).
- Sip, embrace the bitter taste, and know that it’s making you stronger– and maybe just a little tipsy.
And if you’re looking for a great juice recipe, here’s one of my favorites that I make all the time. It’s great in the summer on a long, hot day. Put all of these in a juicer, stir, and enjoy:
- 1 cucumber
- 1 large ripe mango
- 1 lemon, peeled
- 1 lime, peeled
